This was a terrible mistake.

OK, so big things are afoot. I got a story in an anthology, and have rebooted Bridge Builder over here because of that. Not just that, actually, but it was something I wanted to do. I've grown a lot as a writer and I feel like I can really do the story justice now. I will leave this blog up for posterity, I want the evolution of my skills to still be visible and I will use it for stories unrelated to Bridge Builder.

Return Postage

“Oh no, I’m sure you guys are going to love this.” Alex leaned forward, his brand new environment suit squeaking from the motion. He was taking a little too much enjoyment in explaining what happened when you went through the portal in the artifact, into the Dyson shell itself. “The sensation is horrible. It’s like... it’s like a burning hot hand is trying to pull your chest open.”

This is another one-off story, taking place shortly before Bridge Builder and after Rock and A Hard Place. It focuses entirely on the goings-on in Tsla'o space.

“Beloved sister, it has been too long since our paths have met.” He reached out to her and for the first time in months, Kaen found himself smiling for a legitimate reason - not just putting on a show for dignitaries or various members of Tslao royalty.

Drill Down

“I don’t think I’ve seen so many people happy at once on board.” Alex leaned against the wall and took a pull from his drink. The tart cider was a traditional beverage for the Tslao winter festival, the bright flavor mixing well with mood. “Or so many people not minding me being around.”

Alex had been formulating a hypothesis about Eleya. He had originally thought she had a drinking problem. Sergeant Zhenshen confirmed that alcoholism also affected the Tslao, a growing problem after the near-destruction of their homeworld. Attending a variety of social functions with her allowed him to refine it beyond that.

“Hey, mom!” Alex hugged his mother like he hadn’t seen her in years. It hadn’t been nearly that long, but it felt like it.

“Alex, it’s so good to see you again.” Audry had a hug that was much stronger than it looked like she was capable of. She managed to squeeze the breath right out of him.

They arrived at the conference room second despite being about 45 minutes early. An advance contingent of Royal Guard were already there to secure the area, with Sergeant Zhensen on hand to smooth anything out with the humans.
